iDEA 1:- complain in writing. LETTERS TO BIG BUSINESS
How do we get big business to change their ways. Heres my idea. We ALL start writing letters/emails to companies. In the coming months the green pages of www.playross.com are going to feature letter templates to companies, that we can all personalise, then cut and paste into emails that we can start to bombard them with. I include one to Andrex, which I am sending. Feel free to copy it. If you think you can improve it, let me know.
More importantly, write your own to any company who create more single use plastic or other packaging, than needed. Post a copy on here, so we can use use it as a template, and I’ll also put it on playross green pages so anyone can use it in future.
If you want to complain about something you can cut and paste sections from here, then change/ modify/ personalise to make your letter relevant to your complaint.

Dear ........
We stayed at your hotel in ............... last weekend. In many ways it was a good experience, thank you. But I had to write to complain about the amount of single use plastic we found.
In the bathrooms for instance the individual soaps came in little plastic sachets. The shampoo/ shower gel came in small plastic bottles
In the bedroom the ‘breakfast tea’ bags came in plastic sachets. This is all plastic junk which is just completely unacceptable. It’s about time you came up with a plan. Given the amount of visitors you must get every day in your hotels, this must be adding a massive amount of yearly single use rubbish to the environment. Please accept responsibility for this and get a corporate plan to stop it.
You may say it is all recyclable, but since it no doubt all gets emptied into one large bin, it is not being recycled because it gets polluted by everything else. In any case, if you could find a way to provide products without the plastic packaging, that would save the cost of manufacturing the plastic in the first place. We would be much happier if you had had dispensers to dole out portions of soap, without the need for individual packaging. This would also surely save money on all the unused soap tablets that must also get wasted after each guest leaves.
You must be aware the world is facing a single use plastic crisis, and that the UK needs to move quickly to a zero carbon economy by 2030. As a company you need to do your part to make this happen. I’d like some reassurance that you are taking this problem seriously, otherwise we will need to find other places to stay on future visits.
Thank you

Dear Andrex
I’m concerned about the amount of packaging your products come in.
I see on your website you are proud of the efforts your company make to reduce waste and change your products to make them more environmental. I also note that you do have various schemes, like your partnership with Wateraid, which are aimed at helping the third world.
Thank you for that. However the climate crisis and the single use plastic catastrophe that the planet faces demand much more.
You say that all your toilet tissue packaging is either recycled or recyclable (or both). However this is no use if the majority of the packaging is just thrown into bins that go to landfill. You also have to use a lot of energy to manufacture the packaging. Would it not simply be better to remove most of your packaging altogether.
When can we expect to able to buy your products without extra packaging?.
I can tell you that although at present I do buy your product, I am going to have to revise my options and find another source unless I can get your product without extra packaging.
I would be happy to buy in greater bulk to make this possible. I would also be happy to buy loose rolls if I knew that it was contributing to a greener planet.
I am involved with the Herefordshire Green Network. I am sure all our members would support
an option like this. I will be sharing your thoughts on this with our network.
Thank you
