Are we really in the midst of the sixth mass extinction?
The question led to over 100 academics, including former archbishop Rowan Williams, to endorse the movement Extinction Rebellion in a letter in the Guardian in October last year, writing: "we will not tolerate the failure of this or any other government to take robust and emergency action in respect of the worsening ecological crisis. The science is clear, the facts are incontrovertible, and it is unconscionable to us that our children and grandchildren should have to bear the terrifying brunt of an unprecedented disaster of our own making."
Since its launch on 31 October Extinction Rebellion has grown from ten people around an English kitchen table to an international mass movement demanding that leaders act on the scientific information being presented to them about climate breakdown and ecological collapse. XR Herefordshire was launched on 1 Dec 2018 when over 500 people marched through Hereford High Town – initiating several affinity groups around the county. On 3 Dec 2018 David Attenborough said: 'Our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change. If we don't take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon'. On 6 Dec 2018 neighbouring Forest of Dean District Council noted the warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on temperature rises and declared a ‘Climate Emergency’, committing itself to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
Now Ross on Wye residents will have the opportunity to view the information presented by Extinction Rebellion founding member, molecular biophysicist, Gail Bradbrook and see why the movement gained traction over a few short months. The film show will be followed by a discussion and free tea and cake.
Here is the poster if you would like to put one up we would be really grateful, thank you :)
